Service Pack Roll Pack

If we need to roll back the Service Pack for any reason , what steps we should take are not clearly specified in the Service Pack guide. We have deployed Service pack 5 in the FAM non-prod environment, and now we planning to move it to Prod environment.

Can someone please confirm exact Roll back step to be followed-

SailPoint recommends taking a backup of the FAM Database and snapshots of VMs running FAM services before attempting to upgrade your FAM environment.

Incase you need to rollback an upgrade, you could then use the DB backup and VM snapshots to restore FAM to its original state.

As of now, this is the only recommended approach to rollback an upgrade.

Thanks.

We are totally agreed that we have to take the FULL DB back up before we push Service Pack in the system.

Speaking of VM Snapshots, could you please tell us the exact procedure for capturing the snapshots of the VMs and which of the file and folders base we need to capture.

That said, can we not uninstall or delete the newly installed Service Pack content alone if that causes any problem in the system.

As we have gone the whole Deployment guide, nothing has been mentioned about these roll back steps. We are little apprehensive about this roll back part as we are moving the pack in Prod environment.

VM Snapshots – Your server administration team should already have a process to take snapshots of the VMs on a regular basis. If not, you could request them to take an ad-hoc snapshot of the entire environment (all the VMs running FAM services). These are light weight, and it only takes few mins per VM to take a snapshot.

These snapshots can be used to restore your environment if something fails during the upgrade, and you decide to restore. But as I said earlier, service pack upgrades are way smooth.

FAM Upgrades are very involved. It starts with upgrading the DB by executing scripts that modify various objects and sometimes schemas as well.

After that, the upgrade process will take a backup of all the FAM services to be upgraded and then override the installation directory with the latest version of the files. You would have access to the old version of the service  in the backup folder under the FAM installation directory.
