What does \\?\UNC\ means in Permissions collection log?

Jump to solution

We are getting some errors running the Permissions Collection task, and part of the error refers to \\?\UNC\, any explanation why the system reported the BR like that?

Example:

2022-05-04 15:20:02.3921,64,Error,WBX.Common.FSUtils.FileSystem.getDirectorySecurity - [null] System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: (3) The system cannot find the path specified: [\\?\UNC\server01.domain.com\shareXYZ$\Folder\Sub Folder]

Thanks,

JM

Hi!
UNC stands for Universal Naming Convention - and it's a string format representation, that specifies the location of a resource. The standard format is usually <servername>, <share> and <filename> - and the UNC text is just a part of the representation standard in the specific protocols we connect through.
The real path is still \\server01.domain.com\shareXYZ$\Folder\Sub Folder...
