How to: Private messages

 

Overview

The private messaging feature allows users to communicate directly with other members outside of the forum. Private messages can only be viewed by the sender and the recipient.

 

Access your private messages

To access your mailbox, click your avatar in the upper-right corner, then select the envelope icon.

Send a new message

The default view is the Inbox, but you can also view Sent, Friends, and Ignored.

1. To send a message, click the New Message button.

2. Enter the recipient's Compass username, then click on their username when it appears to populate the Send to field.

3. Fill in the Message Subject, then write your note in the Message Body field.

4. When you're ready to send the message, click the Send Message button.

 

Read a message

1. Click your avatar in the upper-right corner, then select the envelope icon.

2. Click the subject line of the message you want to read.

Note: You can now view the full message and take actions such as Delete or Reply. Additionally, you can Friend or Ignore the sender, or Report the message if you'd like to alert a moderator.

 

Turn off or on your private messages

1. Click on My Settings in the drop-down menu under your avatar.

2. Click Preferences, then select the Preferences Options drop-down menu, and choose the Private Messenger option.

3. Check or uncheck the Turn on private messages box.

Private messaging can be helpful when asking for information from a specific community member and basically, for any non-public communication needs.
