Every GA release between the currently installed version and the target version must be installed, but none of the patches on those interim versions are required.
Upgrading from patch versions to GA versions
The upgrade to the next GA release can be applied to any patch version of the previous release without needing to apply any additional patches. For example, upgrade to 8.3 can be done directly from 8.2 GA, 8.2p1, 8.2p3, etc.; the latest 8.2 patch release does not have to be installed before upgrading to 8.3.
However, upgrade from 8.0p1 to 8.3 requires upgrade to 8.1 GA, 8.2 GA, and 8.3 GA in sequence.
Patches are cumulative within versions
Patches are always cumulative within the same version number. To upgrade from a GA version to any patch of the same version number, you only need to apply the target patch. For example, when going from 8.2 GA to 8.2p4, you can just directly upgrade to p4 without needing to first apply p1, p2, and p3.
So, if you are starting at 8.3p2 and you want to get to 8.5p1. You will have to proceed in the following order: 8.3p2 -> 8.4GA ->8.5GA -> 8.5p1
